I am frequently asked the question....why is it called Tiffins?
When we first opened in Cranbrook our aim was to find a name that conjured a pleasant mental picture. Well my ‘picture’ came from the film Carry on up the Khyber where the beloved Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond (Sid James) would spend the afternoons having wonderful Tiffin with the wives of the Khasi of Kalabar (Kenneth Williams). If you have seen the film you will know what I mean. Personally that has conjured a happy picture for me for years. You could however also use the Concise English Oxford Dictionary, whose interpretation is a light afternoon meal if you so wish. Both are pleasant in their own way.
Tiffins consists of a Fully Air Conditioned Wine Bar, Brasserie, Restaurant plus Terrace.
We opened Tiffins in St David’s Bridge on 3rd November 2005 after spending 6 months rebuilding this lovely 19th century property to a standard well above expectations.
One interesting point is that it was originally built as a Temperance Tavern, a venue where people could go without the influence of alcohol..........!!!
